Ghassaan bin al-Mufaddal al-Ghulaabee said:

حدثني بعض أصحابنا قال جاء رجل إلى يونس بن عبيد فشكا إليه ضيقا من حاله ومعاشه واغتماما بذلك فقال أيسرك ببصرك مئة ألف قال لا قال فبسمعك قال لا قال فبلسانك قال لا قال فبعقلك قال لا في خلال وذكره نعم الله عليه ثم قال يونس أرى لك مئين ألوفا وأنت تشكو الحاجة

Some of our associates narrated to me that a man came to Yunus bin Ubayd (d. 139H) and complained of the hardship he was going through in his livelihood and of his anxiety because of it. So he said (to him), "Would you be happy to give up your eyesight for a hundred thousand (dinars, dirhams)?" He said, "No." He said, "Then what about your hearing?" He said, "No." He said, "Then what about your tongue?" He said, "No." He said, "Then what about your aql (intellect)?" He said, "No, [not] for any wants, needs." Then he reminded him of the favours of Allaah upon him after which he, Yunus, said, "I see that you have hundreds of thousands of (dinars, dirhams) yet you are complaining of need!

Al-Siyar of al-Dhahabi (6/292). And the meaning here is that since you have placed such monetary worth on your faculties granted to you by Allaah, then you can't be that destitute like what you are claiming, and in reality, Allaah's favours and bounties upon your are abundant by your own self-admission.

Al-Hakeem al-Tirmidhi said:

صلاح خمسة في خمسة صلاح الصبي في المكتب وصلاح الفتى في العلم وصلاح الكهل في المسجد وصلاح المرأة في البيت وصلاح المؤذي في السجن

The rectitude of five lie in five: The rectitude of a child lies in the study-room. The rectitude of a youth lies in (seeking and acquiring) knowledge. The rectitude of the mature, middle-aged man lies in the masjid. The rectitude of a woman is in her house. And the rectitude of one who harms others is in the prison.

Shaqiq Al-Balkhi on the Signs of True Repentance

Shaqiq al-Balkhi said:

علامة التوبة البكاء على ما سلف والخوف من الوقوع في الذنب وهجران إخوان السوء وملازمة الأخيار

The sign(s) of (true) repentance are: Crying over what has passed by (of one's actions), fear of falling into the sin (once again), boycotting evil company, and accompanying the righteous.

Aboo Dawood (rahimahullaah) reported (no. 345) from Aws ibn Aws ath-Thaqafee (radiallaahu 'anhu): I heard Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) say:

"Whoever washes his head on the day of Jumu'ah, and takes a bath and arrives in time, and he walks and he does not ride, and he draws close to the imaam, and he listens and he does not speak. Then for every step which he takes, there will be for him the reward of a year: the reward of fasting it and standing in Prayer."

Shaikh al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) said this hadeeth is (saheeh) authentic.

Fatwaa on Unification of Religions

The Council of Senior Scholars of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued the following verdict or fatwaa (no. 19402); dated the 25th of Muharram 1418H:

Praise be to Allaah alone. May the blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no other Prophet; and upon his Family, Companions and those who follow them upon goodness, until the Day of Resurrection.

To proceed:

The Council for Islaamic Research and the Giving of Legal Opinions has reviewed the enquiries presented to it, as well as the views and articles that were propagated in the mass media, concerning the call for the Unity of Religions (wahdatul-adyaan) - Islaam, Judaism and Christianity. [It also reviewed] the consequences of this, such as the call to build mosques, churches and synagogues in a single complex - especially in universities, airports and public places; the call to print the Noble Qur'aan, the Torah and the Bible in one book; and other effects of this call, such as establishing conferences, symposiums and societies in both the East and the West [for this purpose].

After careful consideration and study, the Council resolved upon the following:-

Firstly: From the fundamental beliefs of Islaam - which is known from the Religion by necessity and upon which the Muslim [scholars] are agreed - is that no true religion is to be found upon the face of this Earth, except the Religion of Islaam. It is the last of the Religions and supercedes all previous religions, sects and codes of law. Indeed, no religion remains upon the face of the earth, by which Allaah can be worshipped, except Islaam. Allaah the Exalted said:

"Whoever seeks a religion other than Islaam, never will it be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers." [Soorah Aal-'Imraan 3:85]

And Islaam, after the sending of Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, refers to whatever he came with, to the exclusion of all other religions.

Secondly: From the fundamental beliefs of Islaam is that the Book of Allaah the Exalted - the Glorious Qur'aan - is the final Scripture and Covenant revealed by the Lord of the Universe. It abrogates all the previous Scriptures, such as the Torah, the Psalms, the Bible and others, and it is a judge and guardian over them. No other Divinely-Revealed Book or Scripture remains [intact] by which Allaah can be worshipped, except the Noble Qur'aan. Hence, Allaah the Exalted said:

"And We have sent down to you the Qur'aan in truth, which confirms the Books that were before it and stands as a guardian-judge (ar. muhaymin) over them. So judge between them by what Allaah has sent down and do not follow their vain desires." [Soorah al-Maa'idah 5:48]

Thirdly: It is obligatory to believe that the Torah and the Bible were abrogated by the Noble Qur'aan and were changed and tampered with by additions and deletions to them, as has been explained in the verses from the Noble Book of Allaah, such as the statement of Allaah the Exalted:

"So because they broke their covenant We cursed them and hardened their hearts. They distort words from their [correct] places and have forgotten portions of that which they were reminded of. And you will continue to observe deceit from them, except from a few of them." [Soorah al-Maa'idah 5:13]

Allaah the Mighty and Majestic said:

"So woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say:'This is from Allaah,' in order to sell it for a miserable price. So woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for their earnings." [Soorah al-Baqarah 2:79]

And Allaah the Most Perfect said:

"Indeed, amongst them is a party that distort the Book with their tongues as they read it, so that you may think that it is part of the Book whereas it is not from the Book. And they say: 'This is from Allaah,' but it is not from Allaah; and they forge a lie against Allaah knowingly." [Soorah Aal -'Imraan 3:78]

This is why whatever is correct from it, has been abrogated by Islaam, whereas whatever is not, has either been distorted or altered. Indeed it has been confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam became angry when he once saw 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab, may Allaah be pleased with him, with a sheet containing some passages from the Torah. The Prophet 'alayhis-salaatu was-salaam said:

"Are you in any doubt O Ibn al-Khattaab? Have I not brought it [the Message] pure and white? Even if my brother Moses were alive, he would have no recourse except to follow me"¹

Fourthly: From the fundamental beliefs of Islaam is that our Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is the last of the Prophets and Messengers, as Allaah the Exalted stated:

"Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam is not the father of any man amongst you, but he is the Messenger of Allaah and the last of the Prophets." [Soorah al-Ahzaab 33:40]

As such, no Messenger remains, whom it is obligatory to follow, except Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. If any of Allaah's Prophets were living today, they too - along with their followers - would have no recourse except to follow him, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam; as Allaah said:

"And remember when Allaah took the Covenant from the Prophets, saying: Take whatever I have given you from the Book and the Wisdom, and then when there comes to you a Messenger (Muhammad) confirming what is with you, you must then believe in him and aid him. Allaah said: Do you agree to uphold My Covenant? They replied: We agree. Allaah said: Then bear witness; and I am with you amongst the witnesses." [Soorah Aal-'Imraan 3:81]

When the Prophet of Allaah, Jesus - 'alayhis-salaatu was-salaam - comes down in the final period, he will be a follower of Muhammad sallallaahu 'alalyhi wa sallam, judging according to his sharee'ah. Allaah said:

"Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel." [Soorahal-A'raaf 7:157]

Futhermore, from the fundamental belief of Islaam is that Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam was sent to the whole of mankind, as Allaah the Exalted said:

"And We have not sent you, except to the whole of mankind, as a bringer of good news and as a warner. But most of mankind do not know." [Soorah Sabaa' 34:28]

And Allaah, the One free from all imperfections, said:

"Say: O mankind! Indeed I am the messenger of Allaah, sent to you all." [Soorah al-A'raaf 7:158]

Fifthly: From the fundamentals of Islaam it is obligatory to believe that whoever does not enter into Islaam - whether he be a Jew, a Christian, or other than that - is to be designated as an unbeliever (kaafir) and an enemy to Allaah, His Messenger and the believers, and that he is from the inhabitants of the Hellfire; just as Allaah stated:

"Those who disbelieve from the People of the Book and the pagans were not going to part [with their disbelief] until their came to them the clear evidences." [Soorah al-Bayyinah 98:1]

Allaah the Mighty and Majestic also said:

"Indeed those who disbelieve from the People of the Book and the pagans will be in the Hellfire forever; they are the worst of creatures." [Soorah al-Bayyinah 98:6]

It is confirmed in Saheeh Muslim that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said:

"By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad! Any person from this ummah - be he a Jew or a Christian - who hears of me and dies not believing in what I was sent with, will be one of the inhabitants of the Hellfire"²

Due to this, whoever refuses to declare the Jews and Christians to be unbelievers, is himself an unbeliever - in accordance with the principle of the Sacred Law:

"Whoever does not affirm the disbelief of a disbeliever, is himself a disbeliever."

Sixthly: In light of these fundamental beliefs and sharee'ah realities, the call to the unification of religions and seeking to amalgamate them is considered to be a wretched and evil call. Its objective is to mix-up the truth with falsehood, destroy Islaam, demolish its foundations and to lead the Muslims to clear apostacy; which is attested to by the Allaah's saying:

"And they will never cease fighting against you until they turn you back from your religion, if they are able." [Soorah al-Baqarah 2:217]

Allaah the Majestic said:

"They desire that you reject faith, as they have rejected faith, so that you may become alike." [Soorah an-Nisaa 4:89]

Seventhly: The implications of this evil call are:-

Nullification of the differences between Islaam and disbelief, truth and falsehood, good and evil.
Breaking the barriers of alienation such that nothing remains of allegiance (walaa), disassociation (baraa), jihaad, and fighting to make Allaah's Word supreme upon His earth. Allaah the Majestic said:
"Fight against those who do not believe in Allaah, nor the Last day, nor forbid what Allaah and His Messenger have declared unlawful, nor do they submit to the Religion of truth - from those who were given the Scripture, until they pay the Submission-Tax (jizyah), feeling themselves subdued." [Soorah at-Tawbah 9:29]
Allaah the Exalted [also] said:
"And fight against the pagans collectively, as they fight against you collectively, and know that Allaah is with the pious." [Soorah at-Tawbah 9:36]

Eighthly: This call to the Unification of Religions, had it emanated from a Muslim, it would be viewed as clear-cut apostacy (riddah) from the Religion of Islaam! This is because it conflicts with the fundamental beliefs; is content with blasphemy against Allaah the Exalted; nullifies the truth of the Qur'aan, in that it has abrogated all [previous] Scriptures; and negates [the fact] that Islaam has abrogated [the validity of] all previous religions and codes of law. Based upon this, its concept is rejected by the Sacred Law and it is catagorically prohibited by the proofs from the Qur'aan, the Sunnah and the scholarly consensus (ijmaa).

Ninethly: Based upon the aforementioned:-
1 - It is not permissible for any Muslim who believes in Allaah as Lord; Islaam as the [true] Religion; and Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam as the Prophet and Messenger, to call to this abominable ideology, or to encourage others to join it, give it currency amongst the Muslims; let alone to accept it and to attend its conferences and seminars and affiliate with its assemblies.

2 - It is impermissible for any Muslim to print copies of the Torah or the Bible; so how can it be permissible to print the the Noble Qur'aan along with them in one book! Whoever does or advocates this has indeed strayed far [from the right path]. Since doing this entails mixing the truth; which is the Noble Qur'aan, along with the distortions and abrogated truths of the Torah and the Bible.

3 - It is not permitted for any Muslim to respond to the call for building a mosque, church and synagogue in one complex. For this entails accepting [the validity] of a religion by which Allaah can be worshipped, other than the Religion of Islaam. [It also entails] denying the supremacy of Islaam over all other religions; an acknowledgement that there are three [valid] religions for the people of this earth and that any one of them can be adopted as a religion, because they are all on an equal footing; and that Islaam has not superceded the previous religions. There is no doubt that affirming, believing or being pleased with this is actually a rejection of faith and misguidance, because it clearly violates the Noble Qur'aan, the pure Sunnah and the consensus of the Muslim [scholars]. It would also imply an affirmation that t he [textual] corruptions committed by the Jews and Christians are from Allaah - exalted is He above this.

Moreover, it is not allowed to call churches 'the houses of Allaah' or [to believe] that its people worship Allaah in them with a correct and acceptable worship, since they worship upon other than the guidance of Islaam. Allaah the Exalted said:

"Whoever seeks for a religion other than Islaam, never will it be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be amongst the losers." [Soorah Aal-'Imraan 3:85]

Rather, they are places in which disbelief (kufr) occurs - and we seek refuge in Allaah from disbelief and its people. Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah the Exalted have mercy upon him, said in Majmoo' Fataawaa (22/162):

"They [i.e. churches] are not houses of Allaah, rather the houses of Allaah are the mosques (masaajid). On the contrary, they are houses wherein disbelief in Allaah occurs; even though Allaah's Name is mentioned in them. For houses are according to the status of its people; and these people are disbelievers (kuffaar), so these are houses wherein disbelievers worship."

Tenthly: From that which is obligatory to know is that calling the disbelievers, in general - and the People of the Book, in particular - to Islaam is incumbent upon the Muslims according to the explicit texts of the Book and the Sunnah. However, this should be done with clear proofs, good argumentation and by not forfeiting anything from the laws of Islaam. This will lead to them being convinced about Islaam and accepting it, or it will lead to establishing the proof against them. Allaah the Exalted said:

"Say: O People of the Book! Come to a word that is fair between us and you; that we worship none but Allaah; that we associate no partner along with him in worship; and that none of us shall take lords besides Allaah. Then if they turn away, say: I bear witness that we are Muslims." [Soorah Aal-'Imraan 3:64]

As for debating and meeting with them, or holding dialogues with them such that they may bring about their desires, achieve their objectives, vanquish Islaam and destroy faith, then this is falsehood and is rejected by Allaah, His Messenger and the Muslims - and we seek Allaah's aid against what they ascribe to Him. Allaah the Exalted said:

"Beware of them, lest they turn you away from a part of what Allaah has revealed to you." [Soorah al-Maa'idah 5:49]

Thus the Committee, in resolving upon this and clarifying it to the people, sincerely advise the Muslims in general, and the People of Knowledge in particular, to fear and obey Allaah the Exalted; to be concious of Him; to defend Islaam; safeguard the 'aqeedah of the Muslims from misguidance and its callers, and from disbelief and its adherants; to warn people about this invitation to misguidance and disbelief - the call to the Unification of Religions - and against falling into its traps. We seek refuge in Allaah for every Muslim, from becoming a cause for bringing such misguidance into the lands of the Muslims and from spreading it amongst them.

We ask Allaah the Most Perfect, by His beautiful Names and lofty Attributes that He protects us all from being afflicted with misguidance; that he makes us rightly-guided and rightly-guiding; and makes us defenders of Islaam upon guidance and light from our Lord, until we meet Him and He is pleased with us. With Allaah lies all success. May Allaah extol and send the blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad; and upon his Family, Companions and followers.

A Brief Introduction to the Salafi Dawah‏ ~ Article & Audios

The Salafi Da'wah (da'wah literally means "call", and in this sense it refers to calling to the truth, preaching and propagation) is that of the Qur'an and the Sunnah (i.e. the Religion of Islam - pure and free from any and all additions, deletions and alterations). It means adherence to the Path of the Messenger, may the peace of Allah upon him, and the Faithful Believers, namely the Pious Forefathers (i.e. As-Salaf as-Saalih) of the Islamic Community of Believers and all those who follow in their footsteps in belief, actions and morals.

Allah has said: And whoever contends with and contradicts the Messenger after guidance has been clearly conveyed to him and chooses a path other than that of the Faithful Believers, We shall leave him in the Path he has chosen and land him in Hell, what an evil refuge! [Surah al-Nisaa' 4:115]

Shaikh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah commented on this verse: "All who contradict and oppose the Messenger after the right path has been clearly shown to them, have followed other than the Path of the Believers; and all who follow other than the Path of the Believers have contradicted and opposed the Messenger after the right Path has been shown to them. If one thinks that he is following the Path of the Faithful Believers and is mistaken, he is in the same position as one who thinks he is following the Messenger and is mistaken."

Who are the Salaf and who are the Salafis?

The Pious Forefathers (i.e. As-Salaf as-Saalih) of the Islamic Community of Believers are the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, their Followers (the Taabi'een and the Taabi Taabi'een (i.e. the first three generations of Muslims) and the Scholars of the Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah after them who followed their way in belief and deed. Among them are :

Imam Abu Hanifah (150 AH),

Al-Awzai (157 AH),

Ath-Thawri (161AH),

Al Laith ibn Saad (175 AH),

Imam Malik (179 AH),

Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak (181 AH),

Sufyan ibn Uyainah (198 AH),

Imam Ash-Shafi'i (204 AH),

Ishaq (238 AH),

Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal (241 AH),

Al-Bukhari (256 AH),

Muslim (261 AH),

Abu Dawood (275 AH) and others.

Ibn Taymiyyah (728 AH), and his students: Adh-Dhahabi (748 AH), Ibn al-Qayyim (751 AH), Ibn Katheer (774 AH) and others.

The Salafis are the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah. They are the Taaifatul- Mansoorah (the Aided, Victorious Group) and the Firqatun-Naajiyyah (the Saved Sect) which have been mentioned in the following statements of the Messenger, peace be upon him:

"There shall not cease to remain a single group from my community upon the Truth, victorious; they are unharmed by those who abandon them and those who oppose them. They will remain (in my community and in such a state) until they fight the liar (i.e. the Anti-Christ (Dajjal)." [Reported in Sahih Muslim]

"Verily those before you from among the People of the Book split into seventy-two sects and verily this religion . . . "

and in another narration

" . . . this Ummah will split into seventy-three sects: seventy-two will be in the Fire and one in Paradise and that is the Jamaa'ah." [Reported by Abu Daawood - Sahih]

"And this Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects all of which except one will go to Hell and they (i.e. the Saved Sect) are those who are upon what I and My Companions are upon (i.e. those who follow My Way and the Way of my Companions.)" [Reported by at-Tirmidhee - Hasan]

Why do we call ourselves Salafis?

The name Salafi refers to the one who attaches himself to that group of people about whom the Prophet , peace be upon him, said: "The best of people is my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them (i.e. the first three generations of Muslims)." [Reported by Bukhari and Muslim - Mutawaatir]. This attachment is not to a single person or persons (i.e. scholars), which is the case of many groups present today. It is not an attachment to a person or even tens of people, but to that which will not err, since it is impossible that the Salaf would unite upon error or misguidance. So in his subscribtion to the way of the Salaf, the Salafi has attached himself to that which cannot go wrong. This is taken from the hadith: "My Ummah will not unite upon error." [Reported by at-Tirmidhee and Haakim - Sahih], and it is not correct that this hadith refers to the people of later ages, since it was only in the era of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his Companions that the Ummah was free from widespread division and deviation. The deviant sects separated themselves from the Jamaa'ah after them, and from that time onwards their was disunity.

The previous ahaadeeth about the Taaifat- ul-Mansoorah (the Aided Group) and the Firqat-un-Naajiyah (the Saved Sect) show who is meant in this hadith, i.e. those who have the outlook and follow the way of the original guided and united group, the first three generations of Muslims: As-Salaf as- Saalih.

The word Salafi is an abridgement for a long definition. Someone who is a Salafi means:

He is not of the sects of the Khawaarij who consider the Muslims to be Kaafirs (nonbelievers) due to their commiting major sins, and make lawful the taking of their wealth and blood.

He is not of the sects of the Shi'ah (Shi'ites) who hate and curse the Prophet's Companions and claim them to be apostates, claim that the Qur'an has been altered, reject the authentic Sunnah and worship the Prophet's Family, peace be upon them.

He is not of the Qadariyyah who deny Qadr (the Divine Decree).

He is not of the Murjiah who claim Imaan (Faith) to be only in words and not in deed.

He is not of the Asharriyah who deny Allah's Attributes.

He is not of the Sufis who worship graves, saints and claim Divine incarnation.

He is not of the Muqallidoon who necessitate that every Muslim adhere to the Madhhab (School of Thought) of a particular Imam or Shaikh, even when that madhhab differs with the clear verses of the Qur'an and authentic hadiths of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

He values Tawheed (the Unity of Allah), singling out Allah in his worship, supplication, seeking aid, seeking refuge in times of ease and hardship, sacrifice, vow-making, placing total reliance in Him and in judging by what Allah has revealed as well as all other forms of worship. This is the foundation he strives to build without which there is no true Islamic Governance.

He actively tries to remove Shirk (asscociating partners with Allah) which is present in all the Muslim lands, as removing it is a requirement of Tawheed. He knows victory is not possible without Tawheed and that Shirk cannot be fought with the likes of it (i.e. another form of Shirk). So he follows the way of all the Prophets and the example of our Noble Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and he renounces those who, whilst claiming to be the true reformers, compromise with the proponents of Shirk within the Muslim Ummah.

He adheres to the Prophet's , peace be upon him, way in his life and the way of his Companions after him. The Prophet , peace be upon him, said: "I am leaving you two things and you will never go astray as long as you cling to them -- they are the Book of Allah and my Sunnah." [Reported by Al- Haakim - Sahih].

He returns to the Word of Allah and His Prophet, peace be upon him, whenever there is disagreement or difference of opinion, acting in accordance with the saying of Allah: "If you differ in anything among yourselves refer it to Allah and His Messenger if you do believe in Allah and the Last Day, that is more better and more suitable for final determination." [Surah al-Nisaa' 4:59]

He gives precedence to the Word of Allah and His Prophet, peace be upon him, above the words of anybody else, according to the speech of Allah: "O you who believe! Do not put yourselves forward in the presence of Allah and His Prophet and fear Allah. Verily Allah is All-Hearing and All-Knowing." [Surah al-Hujuraat 49:1].

He revives the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in his worship and behaviour and thus his behaviour and his life become a stranger among the people as the Prophet, peace be upon him, has mentioned in his saying: "Islam began as a stranger and shall return as a stranger as it began. So give glad tidings to the strangers." [Reported by Muslim - Sahih]. And in another narration: "So give glad tidings to the few, those who purify, correct what the people have corrupted of my Sunnah." [Al-Silsilah of Shaikh al-Albaani - Sahih].

He enjoins the good (calls to Tawheed, obedience to Allah and imitation of the Prophet, peace be upon him) and forbids the evil (warns against Shirk, disobedience to Allah and turning away from the Prophet's, peace be upon him, Sunnah). Thus he warns the people, out of deep concern, about the innovations, misguided ways and of the deviant, destructive groups who only invite the people for worldly gain, rule and authority in the land and not for the establishment of Tawheed or the removal of Shirk.

He acts in accordance with speech of Allah: "Truly he succeeds who purifies it (i.e. the soul)". [Surah as-Shams 91:8], so he seeks constant forgiveness, makes true repentance, brings Allah to mind abundantly, and rushes to perform the righteous deeds in order to purify his soul.

He worships Allah out of a combination of Fear, Hope and Love. Allah says in the Qur'an:

"...Call upon Him, with Fear and Hope." [Surah A'raaf 7:56], and He says: "Their limbs do forsake their beds the while they call upon their Lord out of Fear and Hope and they spend (in charity) out of the sustenance which We have bestowed upon them." [Surah as-Sajdah 32:16] and He says: "Yet there are men who take (for worship) others besides Allah: as equal (with Allah). They love them as they should love Allah. But the Believers are overflowing in their love for Allah." [Surah al-Baqarah 2:165]. The Salaf used to say: "Whoever worships Allah with Love only is indeed a Zindeeq (Heretic) and whoever worships Him with Hope only is indeed a Murji (one who believes that sins impart no harm as long there is Faith) and he who worships Him with Fear only is indeed a Haruri (one of those who deserted from the army of 'Ali and fought against him). But he who worships Him with Love, Fear and Hope is indeed a believing Muwahhid (i.e. one clinging to the Tawheed of Allah.)"

The word Salafi is an abridgement of that long definition. Furthermore, Salafiyyah is not the blind following of any particular Shaikh or Imaam. It is only adherence to the Qur'an and Sunnah as understood by the Pious Forefathers (i.e. As-Salaf as-Saalih) of the Islamic Community of Believers (Ummah).

Therefore, upon comprehending this, a Muslim has no option but to become a Salafi; since in doing so he attaches to that group which has been guaranteed success, victory, salvation and safety from the Fire by the Prophet, peace be upon him, Sahih (Authentic) hadiths, and he dissociates himself from that which has deviated and separated from the Firqatun- Naajiyah (the Saved Sect.).

What are the Knowledge-Based Fundamentals of the Salafi Da'wah?

The belief that Allah exists and is the Creator of all things, and all other aspects of Tawheed.

Rather this fundamental encompasses much more. It means:

Belief in Allah's Names and Attributes mentioned in the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, in accordance to their literal Arabic meanings without denial of these attributes or likening them to the attributes of His Creation. This principle is known as Tawheed-ul-Asmaa' was-Sifaat (Unity of Names and Attributes). Allah says in the Qur'an: "Say, (O Muhammed): He is Allah the One, Allah the Self-Sufficient Master (whom all creatures need). He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is nothing comparable to Him." [Surah al-Ikhlaas 112]. And Allah also says: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer." [Surah ash-Shoora 42:11]

To single out Allah in all acts of worship. This principle is known as Tawheed-ul-Ibaadah (Unity of Worship). Allah says in the Qur'an: "And the Mosques are for Allah (alone) so do not invoke anyone along with Allah." [Surah al-Jinn 72:18]. And He says: "Whoever has hopes in the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteous actions and in the worship of his Lord admit no one as partner." [Surah al-Kahf 18:110]

To single out Allah in His Ruboobiyyah (Lordship). This principle is known as Tawheed-uRuboobiyyah (Unity of Lordship)

The Salafi Minhaaj (i.e. methodology of beliefs) maintains that these three aforementioned principles of Tawheed are inseparable from one another because they are the pillars of the meaning of the testimony: "Laa ilaaha illallaah" (There is nothing which has the right to be worshipped except Allah). Under these principles lie many issues which the scholars among the Salaf have expounded upon in their books throughout the centuries. The Salafi constantly directs his attention to learn and apply these issues so that he may actualize and perfect his Tawheed.

Ittiba'a (Following)

"Say: If you (men) really do love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." [Surah Aali Imraan 3:31]

After the Salafi has learnt Tawheed in accordance with its aforementioned principles, it is incumbent upon him to adhere to the way of the Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him. This is the actualization of his declaration that: "Muhammed ar-Rasoolullaah" (Muhammed is the Messenger of Allah). This fundamental does not only mean that Muhammed ibn 'Abdullah is the last Prophet and Messenger, rather this fundamental is incomplete except with the following:

Belief that the Prophet , peace be upon him, came with two revelations: the Qur'an and the Sunnah. The Prophet, peace be upon him, has said: "I have indeed been given the Qur'an and something along with it." [Reported by Abu Daawood and Daarimee - Sahih]. And he, peace be upon him, has said: "As long as you hold fast to two things which I have left among you, you will never go astray: Allah's Book (i.e. the Qur'an) and the Sunnah of His Messenger." [Reported by Al-Haakim - Sahih].

Belief that obedience to the Messenger is absolute and that his position is unapproachable by anyone else among mankind. Therefore, the Prophet , peace be upon him, is alone to be obeyed and followed. All beliefs, statements, deeds and morals which are against his are to be rejected and annihilated.

Adherence to the Way of the Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, is never complete except with the perfection of love towards him. What assists in developing this love is constant adherence to his commands, haste in obeying him, placing forward his statements above all others, the study of his Seerah (life and biographical accounts) and the study and practical implementation of his Sunnah in everyday life. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "None of you believes until I become more beloved to him than his father, child and all mankind." [Reported by Muslim - Sahih].

It is unfortunate that true adherence to the Way of the Prophet, peace be upon him, has weakened in the Ummah and true love for him has all but disappeared. This is due to many reasons among which are:

The abandoning of the Sunnah of our Prophet, peace be upon him, its removal from our daily lives, belittling it and the attitude of pride and arrogance towards it.

The spread of numerous unsubstantiated and fabricated hadiths throughout the Ummah, which are the among the sources of difference and disunity.

The spread of many innovated practices among the Ummah.

The requiring of each Muslim to blindly adhere to a particular madhhab (i.e. taqleed: literally "blind following").

The deliverance of religious verdicts without knowledge or evidence.

The cessation of the implementation of the Sharee'ah (Islamic Law) throughout the lands of Islam and its replacement by the ways and laws of the Kuffaar (disbelievers).

Tazkiyah (Purification)

"Allah did confer a great favour upon the believers when He sent a Messenger from amongst themselves reciting unto them His verses (i.e. the Qur'an) and purifying them (from sins and pagan ignorance by their adoption of his way) and instructing them in the Book (i.e the Qur'an) and the Wisdom (i.e. the Sunnah) while before they had been in manifest error." [Surah Aali Imraan 3:164]

The Qur'an and Sunnah are the only sources for Tazkiyah (i.e. purification, integrity, honesty, righteousness, justice, etc.).

The Prophet Muhammed , peace be upon him, is the purest of mankind in his soul, and his character was that of the Qur'an. There is none that comes close to him in this. For this reason he is the model for Tazkiyah. Allah says in the Qur'an: "Indeed in the Messenger of Allah is a beautiful pattern of conduct to follow for anyone whose hopes lie in Allah and the Last Day and who remembers Allah abundantly." [Surah al-Ahzaab 33:21].

The Prophet's Companions and the rest of the Salaf are also, as a whole, a fine model to follow in Tazkiyah.

There is no way of drawing closer to Allah except by adhering to what the Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, came with. The Prophet, peace be upon him, has said: "If anyone introduces into this affair of ours (i.e. the religion of Islam) anything which does not belong to it, he will have it rejected." [Reported by Muslim - Sahih]. And he, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever does an action which we (Allah and His Messenger) have not commanded it will be rejected." [Reported by Muslim - Sahih]

There does not exist any specific set of actions which lead to Tazkiyah, rather the whole of Islam leads to Tazkiyah (i.e. purification of the soul). Allah says: "O you who believe! Enter into Islam wholeheartedly (i.e. obey all the regulations of Allah and His Messenger) and follow not the footsteps of Shaytaan. Verily! He is to you an open enemy." [Surah al-Baqarah 2:208].

The farce referred to as Sufism has corrupted the beliefs, deeds and morals of the Muslims.

The Salafi Minhaaj (i.e. methodology or way) stands between the two extremes of mysticism (i.e. Sufism) and scholastic theology (i.e. the use of logical and rationale "proofs" to explain the teachings of Islam -- such as the misguided Mu'tazilah).

The Salafi Minhaaj represents a true exemplification of piety. It is Imaan (Faith) and not Nifaaq (hypocrisy), purity and not filth.

The Aims of the Salafi Da'wah

The Salafi Da'wah is neither directed towards a specific belief nor a particular action. Likewise the Salafi Da'wah is neither a movement of social reform nor a political party. Rather the Salafi Da'wah is that of Islam in the total sense of the word. As Islam is the religion of Allah, it follows therefore, that it is neither the religion of a specific nation nor of a particular group of people. It is the religion intended for the whole earth and all of mankind. For this reason the Salafi Da'wah is neither one of a specific nation nor of a particular group of people; but it is the Minhaaj inclusive of understanding Islam and acting according to its teachings. Built upon this understanding is the realization that the aims of the Salafi Da'wah are the same as those of the Da'wah (Call) of Islam and not those of a particular religious sect or group, therefore the Salafis remain distinct from the various sects and groups in respect to the way and methodology of Da'wah (i.e. calling, propagating, preaching). They call to Islam as a whole, for its correct understanding and implementation. They do not call to particular aspects of Islam, unlike the many misguided groups who emphasize and call to a particular aspect of it, thereby playing fast and loose with its other aspects to suit their own needs. Thus this true call is, in essence, the call of all the Prophets; to the Tawheed of Allah, the annihilation of Shirk, sincerity in His worship, obedience to his Messengers and the following of their way; this is also the essence of the Salafi Da'wah.

Here are the aims of the Salafi Da'wah which are included in, and of themselves are, the aims of the Da'wah of Islam:

To produce "true" Muslims.

To bring into existence a "true" Islamic Society. Allah says: "They (i.e. the Believers) are those who if We give them the authority in the land, establish the prayer, give the obligatory charity (i.e. Zakat) and enjoin what is good (i.e. to worship Allah in His Oneness and to obey all of His commandments) and to forbid wrong (i.e. to join others in worship with Allah and to disobey any of His orders). And with Allah rests the decisions of all affairs." [Surah al-Hajj 22:41].

To establish the proofs of Allah against the Kuffaar and the deviant heretics and groups within the Ummah. Allah says in the Qur'an: "[We have sent] Messengers as bearers of good news and as warners, in order that mankind shall have no plea against Allah after the Messengers. And Allah is Ever-Powerful, All- Wise." [Surah Aali Imraan 3:165].

To absolve ourselves with Allah by discharging the trust of Da'wah which He has made obligatory upon us. Allah says: "And when a community amongst them said: 'Why do you preach to a people whom Allah is about to destroy and punish with a severe torment?' The preachers said: 'In order to be free from guilt before your Lord (i.e. Allah) and perhaps that they may fear Allah.'" [Surah Araaf 7:164].

The Distinguishing Characteristics of the Salafi Da'wah

Among the distinguishing characteristics of the Salafi Da'wah are:

Actualization of Tawheed in the beliefs, statements, and deeds of the Muslims. Allah says: "Worship Allah (alone) and join none with Him in worship." [Surah al-Nisa' 4:36].

Actualization of the unity of the Muslims through their strict adherence to the Sunnah. Allah says: "And hold fast all of you together to the Rope of Allah (i.e. the Qur'an) and be not divided among yourselves..." [Surah Aali Imraan 3:103].

The Evils Of Interest Based Loans & Mortgages

Question:

Is it allowed for me to take out a loan (Mortgage) from a bank that deals with interest to buy a house? Benefit us may Allaah reward you with good.

Answer:

Even if you were in dire need of eating a piece of bread to save yourself from death still don't borrow anything from the bank whatsoever, let alone buying a house or a car. When one is in a adverse situation forced by circumstance (severe hunger) Allaah has made lawful for you al-Maitah (dead animals), and the flesh of swine, and that which has been killed by a violent blow or by a headlong fall; yet ar-Ribaa (interest) has not been allowed for you, interest is very dangerous, very dangerous. So don't deal with interest and be patient; since Allaah the Perfect and the Most High mentions: And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allaah, then He will suffice him. (Surah At-Talaq 65:2-3)
So dealing with interest is a grave sin, a dangerous matter and the one who makes it allowable has disbelieved. Therefore if you are in need of a house then be patient until Allaah provides it for you, seek refuge in Allaah and utilise the necessary means until Allaah paves the way for you to obtain a house. Either that or you die being free from waging war against Allaah. Since the Muraabi (the one who deals with interest) is warring with Allaah - and Allaahs refuge is sought - as Allaah the Perfect and the Most High mentions:
And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allaah and His Messenger but if you repent, you shall have your capital sums. Deal not unjustly (by asking more than your capital sums), and you shall not be dealt with unjustly (by receiving less than your capital sums). (Surah al-Baqarah 2:279)
He (Allaah) declares war upon the people of ar-Ribaa (interest) and "the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) cursed the usurper of interest, the one who pays it, the one who records it and the two witnesses to it."
[Reported by Muslim in his Sahih (11/36 no.1598 - Nawawi) from the Hadith of Jaabir radiallaahu 'anhu]
What do you want after the curse?! Will the house benefit you when you are in front of the Hellfire?! So the believer should fear Allaah and should have patience upon his destitution and his need; for indeed Allaah the Perfect and the Most High mentions:
And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient ones. (Surah al-Baqarah 2:155)
Be patient and Allaah will give you this mighty reward instead of exposing yourself to His curse, His anger, His wrath and His punishment. Bear this severity in the world for it is nothing in comparison to the anger of Allaah and His punishment.
We ask Allaah that He protects us by His grace and favour from everything that incurs His anger and wrath. Indeed our Lord is All-Hearing of our supplications. And may the blessings of Allaah and peace be upon our prophet Muhammad, his family and upon his companions.

The virtues of the beloved Companions by Sheikh 'Abdulmuhsin Al-'Abbad

It has been established that the Messenger rsaid, “Whoever calls to guidance will have the reward similar to all those who follow him without their reward diminishing in any way and whoever calls to misguidance, he will have the sins similar to all those who follow him without their sins decreasing in any way.”[1]

This noble hadeeth primarily necessitates a great portion and fortune for the Companions because they are the ones that took this guidance and light from the Messenger rand passed it on to those after them. So all those that benefited from it, the Companions ywill have reward similar to theirs until Allaah inherits the earth and those upon it.

Yet before them, the Messenger r, (since) he came with this good and this guidance. Allaah will reward His Prophet rwith the same reward as He gives to all those who were guided, entered the religion of Allaah and did good deeds, without their reward decreasing in any way. This is because the Prophet ris the one who called the people to this guidance. He has the same reward of all those who benefited from it due to him, may Allaah’s blessing be upon him r.

The Companions of the Messenger of Allaah will have a great portion and fortune from that reward for they are the ones who obtained this guidance and passed it on to those after them. They are the ones who collected the Quran. They are the ones who memorised it. They are the ones who passed it on to those who came after them. Those who obtained the Sunnah of the Allaah’s Messenger r, May Allaah be pleased with them. They passed it on to those who came after them thereby gaining much reward and recompense. They will receive a great reward and a great fortune from the call of the Messenger r.

Reading Islamic Information Centre & Inner Community Engagement is a community organisation and Islamic centre which was formed to raise awareness, knowledge and understanding of orthodox Islam amongst members of the Reading community. By providing information to Muslims and non Muslims around Islamic beliefs, and clearing any misconceptions which people may have about the religion of Islam. We aim to empower the Reading community against false ideologies which give rise to violent extremism or support Al-Qaida inspired theology, that have crept into the religion of Islam. As well as inviting Muslims and non Muslims to come and learn about the religion of Islam and addressing any questions or concerns they may have.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the first regional Islamic Seminar in condemnation of jihadist extremism. The event will be held at the Reading University on Thursday 2nd December 2010, at 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require further information.

From Imaam an-Nawawee's Introduction:

"Subsequently, you have from the Scholars those who have compiled forty Hadeeth concerning the fundamentals of the Religion; others concerning the subsidiary branches, others concerning Jihaad, others concerning Zuhd, others concerning manners, and others concerning admonishments. All of them are righteous intentions and may Allaah be pleased with those who had these righteous intentions. I deemed it appropriate to compile forty hadeeth that encompasses all of that. Every hadeeth has in it a grand principle from the principles of the Religion."
